New Here and Looking for a Class B

Hi All,

First off, I wanted to say hello to everyone...as I am new here. *waves*

I am looking to get my first RV...and looking for a class B.

Have done a fair amount of research, and am looking at a used Roadtrek...either a 170 or 190 Popular. Looking to spend up to 25K so maybe a 2000-2004??

I will live in the rig about 75% of the time, and would like to get feedback:

Rather than list all of my questions, are there some threads on plusses/minusses on these units? Things I need to look for?

Maybe there's a book I should buy?

I wanted to get this thread started and see what I can learn.

I'm a newbie here...and am new to this world...so take it easy on me. :)

Thanks in advance. :)

Ken

  • Hi Rob,

Thanks for responding! Here are my answers:

    1. Yes, I will be traveling alone. I'll have the occasional guest, but that will most likely be an overnight thing.

    2. Doubtful but it could be a possibility. If I do I don't think it will be for extended periods. Why?

    3. I will be doing both but want to dry camp as much as I can.

    4. I definitely want a generator and use my computer all day.

    5. Yes, if it's not too over my head. :)

    Thanks!

    Ken

    Hello Ken -

To better answer your questions and give advice, it would help to know the following.

    1) Will you be travelling alone? This answer will help with the 170 or 190 choice, and how many days between returning home to fill water tanks?

    2) Will you be travelling into freezing conditions during the year?

    3) Will you be dry camping or utilizing campgrounds with full hook-ups?

    4) Do you need a generator for extended computer usage?

    5) Are you willing/able to do some modifications?

    Please let us know....................Rob
  • Hi KH

You indicate you have done a lot of research and are looking at 170 or 190 Roadtrek. As noted by others, even though you may spend 75% of yor time in your B unit, these B units are space-confined and therefore the layout is vital to your specific needs. For me, I needed a standup bathroom with shower and not one in the hallway. SO I have a 2006 Pleasure-way Plateau(2007 build) with one of the largest full bathrooms--I am 6ft 2 ins. It is essential to have the full service history of the unit you choose--especially if is not from a reputable dealer. As noted by others, a generator is a consideration and is useful if you are not locating at full service RV parks ie state/provincial parks. Most people have preferences for B MHs but the main ones ie ROadtrek,Pleasureway,GW Vans and Leisure Travel vans are all good ones and have their individual nice features.
The flexiblity of a B MH is worth a lot.You can always bring along a gazebo for extra space or have a zip in for your awning which, presumably, you would have. I have a 34 cu ft Gearspace unit which hooks into my 2 inch receiver hitch and carries all my toys because these B class units dont have a lot of space.
Weloome to the B World and happy rving.,

  • 2007 Sprinter. Travel mostly alone except the two cats
Longest "full time" three months. No problems
    Love it

If I could I would full time; wouldn't be an issue in the size
  • To Artum Snowbird, Gene in NE and omjones above:

Thank you for your help too. Going to utilize all your advice.

    It's much appreciated. :)

  • Makes sense. Thanks for the advice. I'll get my questions together and post some tomorrow.

By the way....I've already been reading your blog...a huge help. :)

It would be easier for you to just ask the questions that you have. There is no book specifically about Roadtrek. There are books about RVs in general and these will explain systems, hooking up, etc. which will apply in most part to a Roadtrek. I found The Idiot's Guide to RVing by Brent Peterson to be very helpful when we were first starting out looking at RVs. When buying a pre-own you want to get as much information as you can about what you are being sold. You should have a mechanic go over the van components and an RV service tech go over the RV components. What you don't want to do is purchase something that will require another $10,000 in unexpected repairs.

Here is a link to pre-owned Roadtreks for sale -

Check out my site linked below - we were like you when we started and I have journaled the whole experience plus on the top right of the page you will see pages where you will find links to how to's that are specific to Roadtreks. We did however buy new - but you will get to see a lot of what you will need to know about a Roadtrek.

So go ahead and ask what you would like to know.

  • R/T has a video. They would send you one if you called and asked, or try their website.

  • You might try using this in your favorite search engine to locate some for sale -
    Roadtrek -directory site.craigslist.org

However, you have to modify the string above by replacing the [period] between site and craigslist with a [colon like this :]. If I tried to insert it in this posting, you would see a happy face like this :c
  • I did a search in the forum for Roadtrek and there are over 1200 entries with that word in them. It is really a good place to start. Be informed before you buy, it's well worth the time it takes.
