New Member and Question

I would look for a good used vehicle that can be towed 4 wheels down as it would be so much easier to deal with while travelling. Removing and replacing a drive shaft would be tedious as most people unhook and drive their toads often. The dolly is just another thing to deal with as well.

In theory, it's always merely a matter of how hard is it to do. Removing a drive shaft is perhaps not hard for a mechanic with 20 years experience, but it's more work than most folks ever want to undertake, and it is certainly more work than having a toad that doesn't need the drive shaft removed. I had a Jeep Libby 4x4 that had a neutral position on the transfer case specifically to enable towing 4-down, but your Nitro evidently does not have that feature. I kind of agree with @Ava that you might find it more enjoyable not having to deal with the dolly as well as put the drive shaft back in. It's up to you.

You could look into a drive shaft disconnect , that would sure make
things a lot easier .
With my luck it would be raining when I needed to do the drive shaft .

I know nothing about disconnecting drive shafts. I do use a tow dolly and if I were you I would come up with a plan B. You are really asking for more work that you may want. You are either going to be working with the drive shaft in the middle of the campground road, or on some pea gravel somewhere. What ever way you go good luck and happy camping.

I also think it will work. But, I also think it is more effort than necessary.
If you were towing it from Point A to Point B and using it at Point B until you return home, it would be okay.
However, if you are stopping at several campgrounds, Walmart, etc., I think it would get old real quick.

And, if you are stopping at campgrounds, make sure they allow you to work on the car. I know it's a simple task to reattach the drive shaft but, some CG's may not allow any maintenance.
Try it for your shake down run, then decide if it's worth the effort.

If that is what I needed to do then I would have one real concern. What would I do if I got into a situation where I needed to back up. With the toad it is nearly impossible to do this so the toad would need to be disconnected, driveshaft reinstalled,then the toad moved before the motorhome could back up. This can happen while fueling, to use a campground, or to get out of any situation where you can not go forward. Just thoughts before you go.

Do yourself a favor....either get a tow dolly or different vehicle that can be easily towed four down. Getting a tow dolly would probably be less expensive and you probably have the skills to prep the truck for towing (lights). And, there are used tow dollies for sale if you look around.

Welcome to the forum. I am no mechanic - by any stretch - but are there other implications than removing/disconnecting the shaft? Lubrication, charging, steering, etc? If it's a simple matter of disconnecting the shaft then I would think as a mechanic it would be an easy task to install a disconnect kit - I think Remco sells them. As others said, crawling under a car in even in optimum conditions (never mind dirt, mud, gravel, rain) every single time you hook and unhook the car will get old FAST. But, as others said, everything is a compensation. maybe you'd rather do the work than buy a new toad or a trailer. To each is own and I certainly respect someone who even knows how and is willing to do that.

On edit: If you are adamant about keeping your car, you may want to look into a trailer to tow your car. You could back it up, no drive shaft disconnect etc. Of course you have to have a place to store the trailer but everything is a concession. And rather than buy one, rent a trailer to see if that's an option that works. Also you may want to consider leaving the car at home and renting one at various destinations. We will do that on small trips. You can get deals as low as $25-35 a day.

Can't use a dolly with this car. Per the manual:

Recreational towing is allowed ONLY if the driveshaft is removed. Towing with the rear wheels on the ground while the driveshaft is connected can result in severe transmission damage.

Hello & welcome!!! Others have already covered the pros & cons but I thought I'd also throw in my two cents. I also like the idea of trading the vehicle out for one that is towable four down with no hassle. ;)
