New shocks for 99 DSDP

We just had our '99 Dutch Star (38', Freightliner chassis, 92K miles) completely repainted, along with an obscene amount of other new stuff.
Now, I'd like it if it didn't beat our brains out whenever we go over a sharp bump on our next big road trip.
I'd like some suggestions for new shock absorbers, including prices, sources, personal experiences, etc.
And, is changing the shocks on this monster a job for the average home mechanic, or will this be a trip to the Michelin dealer to pull the wheels and change the shocks?
Koni's, Girlings, or what?
Thanks!
Bob

  • I had the Koni FSD shocks installed.
    WHAT a difference!
The ride is smoother, quieter, and no more "crashing" down on large dips.
Also, knocked out the side to side rolling after 90 degree turns, or when getting side gusts.
The old shocks were Bilsteins. The mechanic said they were far from worn out, but the Koni shocks were much larger.
Not the cheapest, but worth it!

  • I installed Bilstein Comfort Ride on the front 4 units; improved the "bang" over expansion joints etc. greatly. Changing out the rear next. Also improved roll and sway for an overall better ride and driving experience.
  • Koni FSD's will give you the best combination of ride and handling. They are more expensive, but the TWO sets of valves allow for both softness over little bumps AND lots of dampening over the large ones.
