New to Class A

Hi everyone:

My wife and I are nearing retirement. We have tent,pop-up, and fifth wheel experience. We are considering snow bird camping and are settling on 38 foot class A or fifth wheel. Both will require substantial funding so we are taking our time before deciding on the life style or purchasing an rv.

We plan on towing a Honda fit if we go the class a route. We would travel from new York to the Gulf states and do some mountain driving. The traveling crew will consist of me, my wife, and our boxer. We want a washer and dryer.

Are there 2014 or 2015 manufacturers or models to be wary of? Any you recommend based on our plans?

For sure the 2015 Honda Fit is not towable, past years are ok
Thanks we have a 2013 manual. What eliminates the newer years?

as class As, I have been very satisfied with the quality of Tiffin, Winnebago, and Itasca class A gassers.

Locally all we have is the Forest River (fr3 and Georgetown) and Thor hurricane/ACE. Thankfully Rochester and Buffalo are only an hour or so รข away. Any thoughts on the FR models?
  • pdogii,

Since you mentioned mountain driving, I would tend to recommend a diesel. They have more torque for climbing hills. Especially in the 38' range Class A. If you go 5th wheel, get a Dodge diesel pick up to tow it. I prefer the Class A as I would rather tow a fuel efficient car to travel in after we get to our destination. Easier to park, too.

    Just my 2c

    Happy Trails! ;)
  • Let me be the first one to welcome you to RV.Net! We travel South in the Winter to AZ. also we have a 36' Winnebago Adventurer (gasser) that I bought new 11 years ago and travel with 2 dogs a Red Standard Poodle and a West Highland Terrier (Westie) and a Yellow Naped Amazon Parrot. We also tow a Honda all 4 wheels down. We live in our coach comfortably we passed on the washer dryer combo because we couldn't fit enough clothes in them that we would like. I would assume that those units are larger now? Mustang 652 mentioned the top of the line gassers which are all good solid coaches! Good Luck in your search.
  • You had me at "boxer"! We have 2 that travel with us. Welcome to rv.net!

We're on our 2nd Class A. The first was a 28' gasser which we enjoyed but decided we would a enjoy a DP more. For us, there are a lot of advantages to having the Class A. The huge windshield and being higher off the road lets you see more of the road as well as the scenery. We like having the kitchen & bathroom available without having to get out of the vehicle.

Most cars can be towed on a dolly but it's way easier to tow 4 down. You may want to make sure your Honda can be. You'll need a tow plate and braking system for it. You'll also need to factor in it's weight when considering a Class A.

I read a couple of other RV forums and the one manufacturer that I see the most complaints about is Thor and more specifically, the Thor Palazzo. I have no personal experience with it but we did look at the Thor ACE when we were first looking for a Class A and were not impressed with the quality.

    Good luck with your decision!
  • Without dumping on a particular brand, read through some of the threads on this page and let me say as far as class As, I have been very satisfied with the quality of Tiffin, Winnebago, and Itasca class A gassers. Have never had a DP, so can't comment on them.
