Lifeline manual
The chart part way down lists charging voltages for bulk/absorb, and float. That is a 3 step charge, as the bulk voltage starts wherever the battery discharge condition dictates and the voltage increases until it hits absorption, and then into float after the absorption time.
I never said the recommended equalization all the time, but only when needed. The same is true with wet cells, you only equalize when the specific gravity tells you to. The equalization is called out in the link also.
Here are the chargers that Lifeline recommends, even puts their name on. Note the many comments in the text about proper charging parameters and increased battery life. Ctek chargers are something like 6 step chargers.
Lifeline charger recommendations
The only time I have heard of using a single stage charger as preferred is if you have a known battery size, known discharge every day or other period, and a charger and time set to bring it back up for the next cycle. Then they work well and do a good job of getting the batteries full, otherwise, they are not the first choice. Golf cart applications are an example.
Where did you find it stated that a single output charger was the preferred charger for Lifeline batteries.
