I'm not an expert but my overseas friends tell me they are only allowed to stay in the US For six months. You could spend the rest of your time in Canada so that may work for you. By alternating between the US and Canada (6 months each) you may be able to avoid the 1 year limit.

A water pump is one thing you should not need to bring, since they all work on 12 volts and are readily available here.
