From Bend we are going to take 20 into the mountains where the road splits, 20 to the south and 22 to the north. Which route is best. I have heard that even at that time of the year either route could be closed from snow. We will be driving a 23 foot MH V-10, is one route better then the other for steep passes.
22 is a much easier route. You actually go over Santiam pass before the split (heading West) but after the split 20 then goes up Tombstone pass, which is much higher, narrower, and has about 7 miles of 15-35 MPH curves coming down the west wide, plus a couple small landslides you cross over. Those sections are sometimes filled with new asphalt, sometimes gravel is pushed over, and sometimes its an abrupt ledge into a large dip.
Also, 20 is not plowed as regularly, as Hwy 22 gets plowing priority after a big storm.
