No brake light or turn signal.

97 E350. As title, neither work. Book shows fuse #11 for brake light switch. Fuse good, but replaced anyway. Seems like all other lights work, tail lights work. Book uses term multifunction switch, fuse ok. LONG way from home, any ideas before I try to get to a Ford dealership?

  • Op again. Did turn out to be the multifunction switch. Small local dealer had a switch that worked. Dealer markup was GREAT! But when on the road no choice. Honest took longer to calculate labor time than install. They charged .8 hrs, took .25 hrs from when he drove back till delivery. But again, what can you do. $21 for shop supplies!!!! Non used. $249 total
  • lets try the light socket first, clean things up, if you got a volt meter see if you got power, try a different bulb first, before I tore into things ,I,d rule out all simple stuff first, a bad ground causes 99% of all light problems.
  • If it has a tilt steering there is a tool to disassemble the tilt mechanism, so that the wiring loom can be extracted, if you are going to do it yourself, disconnect the battery a minimum of 24 hours before you remove the steering wheel, the air bags continue to have power via a capacitor that needs to be discharged, and do not try to unload it manually, the bags will go off.

^^^YES, because the brake signal has to be disconnected when the driver calls for a turn, so the blinking function can take over the use of the same bulb filament.
  • My 1993 e 350 did the same thing ,,it was the multfunction switch or better known as the turn signal lever..its not an expensive part but is a hand ful to change due to the air bag clock...
