If you have a microwave above the stove, more than likely the microwave has a built in "vent", but not vented to the outside. It has a fan the draws steam and grease through a filter and exhausts it back into the air with vents around the microwave. More and more in-home microwave-vent-hoods are like this.
Now, if there is nothing above the stove except wood, or a wooden cabinet, then you can install a hood yourself. The hood in our camper is vented inside the camper, not outside. It's designed to just catch steam and grease in the filter. The filter has to be cleaned often if using it. We never use it because it's so noisey, and we usually cook outside.
