- Dutch_12078Explorer III replaced the OEM fan with this 180mm computer fan. It does an excellent job of exhausting smoke, steam, and smells, and it's so quiet that I added a red LED indicator next to the power switch to remind us it was running. I did the same mod in our previous coach, and installed the included speed control on the front panel. Since we never had a need to turn the speed down from high, I just used the included jumper this time, to run it on high all the time. Installation was as easy as drilling 4 screw holes.

No, it still makes a racket at full speed but now it is not necessary to run it full speed all the time.... Now my wife uses the vent fan frequently on a slower speed instead of the big fan. Seems to work just as well as it did on the fast noisy speed.

I see your point about not needing a higher speed. I was wondering about the relatively small opening on the outside of the trailer and so-called increased air flow of the new fan. I wonder, how much noise these OEM fans make is due to back pressure? - BarneySExplorer III

SoundGuy,
I did the same mod to my stove vent this winter while in Florida. It is a very inexpensive way to make that noisy vent very usable and it was not hard to do. :)

So ... this mod makes the vent fan quiet while it's running full blast?
No, it still makes a racket at full speed but now it is not necessary to run it full speed all the time. We found that very useful this past winter while snowbirding in Florida. In the past, we just used the Fantastic fan mounted in the ceiling if cooking something on the stove due to the noise of the vent fan. Now my wife uses the vent fan frequently on a slower speed instead of the big fan. Seems to work just as well as it did on the fast noisy speed. :)
That modification allows you to dial any speed you want between full and off. Seems to me it would be ideal for cold weather camping where you don't want to, or can't, run a big ceiling mounted high capacity fan.

Has anyone DIY installed one of these? How'd it go? Is it that much of an improvement (worth the money)?

I'll repost my original question in case someone can answer it. I am mainly interested in how quiet it is on high speed. We do a lot of cooking and cold-weather camping so our vent runs on high most of the time.
That PWM converter looks like a great idea for our ceiling vents for nighttime use
Teach - dfmExplorerOn my previous trailer I replaced the fan with a 120mm computer fan made by aeroshark. It worked well and was 99% quieter than the oem fan.
Cost less than $20.00 to do and about 15 minutes to switch. - filthy_beastExplorerI replaced my fan with a computer type fan to make it quieter which works well. I would love to be able to open and close the outside vent hood from the inside but it is not worth $200 to do that. I thought the kit has a nicer light than in the original fans too.
- Chris_BryantExplorer IIKeep in mind the upgrade fan listed has *way* more air flow than the stock exhaust fans- it uses a squirrel cage blower, replacing the 3 blade fan that is usually stock.

That's also where I got the idea ... works great! :) - BarneySExplorer IIISoundGuy,
