Noise, thumping when windy.

2003 Winnebago Adventurer 35U. When driving at any speed over 30 miles per hour when very windy it feels like I'm driving on the highway dots, or that a tire is coming apart. I can hear it and feel it in steering wheel. DW has walked around inside RV when traveling and cannot locate location. This has happened with old tires, new tires, old shocks, new shocks, old brakes and new brakes. No wind, no problem. I'm pretty sure that the wind is buffeting something but what? Thanks in advance.
  • If from the roof, could be the crank up TV antenna. Next time it happens, crank the antenna up 1/8 turn-- just enough to clear the roof and see if the noise goes away.
  • I had a 2003 35u for 10 years.

Had similar noises twice. First the driver side slide topper would unwind a little bit and start flapping. Make sure the little metal arm is set correctly to hold the topper tight.

Second noise was the driver side fender "flapping" when in a strong wind. The fiberglass fender is not well supported. I had to epoxy some bracing to the inside of the fender and bolt it to some of the inner framing. It got so bad it started cracking the fiberglass before I fixed it.

    Good Luck

The DW said that was what it was but no scuffing on them so I looked elsewhere. Thanks.
put chalk on them and you'll see it. I hear it almost every year in the way to Quartzsite through Banning when there is a good crosswind.

I need to look but there may be a steel back brace they are whacking, and not the tire
  • It could also be your awning flapping away from the coach. Make sure it's secure or it might unravel as you're driving....Dennis
  • I had a thumping sound that I couldn't figure out for a long time....finally discovered that it was the bat wing TV anteena on the roof......when the wind caught it just right while going down the road it would thump thump... Are you sure the noise is corresponding with your steering wheel movements?

  • Great sound ain't it? Like Bob said, it's the Mudflaps, and you will hear them in a good side wind. I've pulled over before looking for something dangling or loose before deciding that's what it was.
  • Roads that are patched up will cause a thumping noise especially if you have too much air on the tires. That is if the noise is coming from the lower part. It also could be that a rubber grommet has fallen out off the sway bar and is hitting medal on medal. If the noise is coming from the roof, it could be your bat wing antenna moving up and down, striking the roof.
