OP here,
I recently noticed that since I added the reinforcements, the screw-in hinge pin on my freezer door recently became loose which provided resistance when swinging the door. I believe pressure in that direction could break a hinge.
Make sure your hinge pins do not work themselves loose. Tighten them when the door does not swing freely, this to relieve downward/upward pressure on the hinges.
