Norcold to Samsung

About 2 am hear a beep, beep coming from Norcold refrigerator on electric, shifted to propane and wend back to bed. Later the beep came back. We collect a few ice chests and use the freezer in the campground office. Now we gotta do something with this Norcold.
I talk to a technician that tells me that if its a 2002 model then its time to replace. Ok, now will it be a new RV Refrigerator or a domestic kind.
Some shopping on line tells us that we can replace the broken one with a domestic Samsung and the replacement will be cheaper than a new RV Refrigerator.
We had Camping World remove the bad refrigerator and put the new one in. It fits perfect, and now we have frozen ice cream, lots of ice cubes, more room and saved nearly $2000.00
  • Win, Win! The boondockers will be along to tell you what a bad idea that was. Pay them no attention! You will love having a real fridge that works just like the one at home!
  • Wow, I never heard of ANYBODY, that could state without Diagnosing, that a refer BECAUSE it was a 2002 and beeped was BAD. Now, you may have had a bad cooling unit which required replacing or installing the Samsung. But, if your only source of determining that the refer was BAD was exactly what you stated, then you spent thousands for something you did not need. Did someone come out and diagnosis it was indeed a bad cooling unit? Did you have the dreaded yellow stain at the rear? My point in this post is to make sure someone else does not read it and because his OLD refer beeps, it needs replaced when all it needs is repair. Doug

Many have done the same with no regrets. The Samsung uses 100-150AH per day and while boondocking that power has to come from solar or the gen. And running a MH engine to charge the batteries is not the best option.
  • Too late for the OP but for others considering a change, Dometic just came out with a dual power (AC/DC) compressor model. Draws 65 watts on AC. Runs around $1000. Same size as the Americana series.

  • One of the best improvements we made in our motorhome was removing the Norcold and replacing it with a Samsung. The Norcold still worked and was able to sell it.
  • Our new DP came with a residential fridge, 10 thousand times better than the old four door RV fridge fire trap. We love ours and have no issues boondocking.

Exactly. I boondock with my residential 60% of the time, about 3 months a year. No issues at all other than cold drinks within 45 minutes and more storage. I did install 400 watts of solar, increased my battery bank from 4 to 6 and installed auto gen start. I just turn on the inverter as soon as I get into the coach and set the AGS as soon as I park. I let the electronics do their dance. Enjoy!
