North Carolina Class B Non-CDL

What is the procedure to obtain a non-CDL class B license in North Carolina? I bought a new DP with wt greater than 26,000 lbs.
Do I have to take a driving test or is it only written?
I can find nothing about it on the DNV sites.
  • For driving a motorcoach in NC, weighing over 26,001 lbs, you do need class B non-commercial license.  I took my test, 50 questions on computer.  I studied the CDL handbook since they don't have a non-commercial (regular license) handbook.  I am now scheduled to demonstrate my proficiency in pre-trip inspection and driving skills demonstration.  After successfully taking my computer test, I was issued a temporary learner permit.  The DMV people were not well informed.  I talked with several people before getting someone that knew exactly what to do and how the tests worked. I read the CDL handbook for the pre-trip, which of course is not totally apropos, made a list from it, then added all the things I need to do specifically for my motorcoach.  Not sure they will let me use the sheet I made, so I will go over a couple of times by myself so I will be prepared to do it without the sheet; which is 2 pages long.  Hope this helps. Good luck.

While I am sure DrBob would appreciate this information as well as others on this page, this post is 10 years old, and he hasn't been on here since.

  • One thing I like about the RV laws in NC, since NC is all about Nascar, we can be way over the 60' limit with m/h & trailer combo, as long as we have something to do with some type of organized racing.

  • Thanks.
I am near Asheville. It looks like a Catch-22 in terms of taking the RV to the DMV office for a drive. I hope they don't ask me to parallel park it.
  • I have a NC Class A license (non DCL) .... to get it I had to pass a written test covering the first 3 chapters of the CDL Manual .... nothing really difficult about it .... also had to take an examiner for a ride which involved going around a city block

  • Dr Bob, I took the non Cdl class B test about 2years ago. Study the Cdl drivers manual for the written. The best I can remember, you have 50 multiple choice questions and have to score 80 per cent. I took a driving test for about 6 miles on the four lane, then examiner said to turn around and go back to office. Was not a big deal, but not familiar with other areas. Sky
  • They also will give you a computer test on some trucker's things but they are not overly complicated..You might need someone with a class B for the driving test with you...If you are in eastern to central NC, I might be able to work that out...I have the right non CDL B.
  • I pulled up the NC Driver Handbook and it states that a driving proficiency test in a vehicle of the type for the license you are seeking is required. That was just a quick read but you can download the manual and read it yourself.
