North or South

We did the whole Oregon coast a year ago on our way home from Portland after first GD was born spent couple days less than 3 weeks from Portland to the CA border. Then 3 days home in So. Cal. about 750 miles, so Oregon coast is pretty short to us! LOL and we are still 200 miles from the Mexican border!

We've spent three summers volunteering on the Oregon coast and have traveled up and down many times. It's an amazing place. Some thoughts:
South coast (Florence & South to CA) Less crowded, more rural area with more back roads in the mountains. Lots of beaches with few people. Not many shopping or dining choices south of Coos Bay/North Bend. A long way East over to I-5.
North - More traffic & people due to easier access to I-5 corridor. More shopping/dining choices. Bigger, more crowded parks. Tillamook Cheese Factory!
All of it - beautiful!

I suggest that you stay away from anywhere on the Oregon Coast that has a harbor! My last trip to the Oregon Coast, fog horns kept me awake for most of the night.

South in the winter, north in the summer.

Agree with others, the Oregon coast is not that long so start at one end and go to the other. Each area has specialities. I also agree to visit every lighthouse on the coast. They, too, are all different. We volunteered at Heceta Head - a much photographed beauty. Have a great trip!

Easy start at Astoria and go South you both win.

Do it all less than 400 miles from North to South. So much to see and do along the way.

We have done it 3 times and have just touched the surface.

We did the whole coast in 3 weeks last year. My only recommendation is to travel southward. Almost everything you want to pull off for is between the highway and the beaches, getting out again going north can be a hassle.

If you're at all interested in architecture or airplanes, don't miss the Tilamook Air Museum. The airplane collection is all kept in flyable codntion and the building is amazing. Going from memory here, its over 300 feet across, almost 200 feet high and 1700 feet long. There are NO internal pillars and it's made entirely of wood, except for the hangar doors and their supports. In WW2, it was a base for US Navy airships and the building could hold six fully inflated ships.There were two hangars originally, housing 12 airships, but one burned down when it was being leased to a farmer who stored hay in it. Spontaneous combustion in the hay was the cause.

I like both the north and the south beaches. You really aren't loosing if you wife makes you go to the southern beaches, they are all nice. I would just go with the flow.
