Will you be coming back from Kentucky? if so I'd catch the other side then, One side going and the other side coming. as for me my best memories are of the North side, was taking my son and a friend on a cross country trip to intern in LA Junior Year, we hit the North side after 4" of snow on the 6th of June - We both have never forgotten it. Upon arriving for Sunrise we had breakfast in the lodge Buffet with the View I will never forget.

While on the North side catch Lake Powell - Mexican Hat - Monument Valley and then the San Juan's of Colorado - just the Best.

When you return Catch the South side and all it has to Offer.

So much to see and so little time.

We've been to both and prefer the North Rim for the scenery, trees, deer, less people. What I didn't read here is that at the North Rim, not only do you have access to camping within the park, but there's a Forest Service CG on the road between Jacob Lake, another at the junction and a full service RV park near Jacob Lake - Kaibab Camper Village. Well worth the stay. A little tight but you can get in there and it's in a beautiful grove of trees.

mssmith1199 - Nope. Paved roads all the way. Three easy access overlooks. One at the lodge and 2 on road spurs. Expensive lodge dining or one cafeteria. Nice scenery and quiet, more of a camper's spot than a tourist's spot as compared to the south rim.

I went to the South rim when we lived in Tucson in 1957----never went back as it seemed to me to be geared to emptying your wallet. Love the North rim and I have even been to the bottom riding the mules.....Its something you will never forget and makes you feel real small!

Both sides are unique and different. I can't say I like one more than the others as it is like comparing apples to oranges. There are ALWAYS fewer people on the North rim. Here is a good read about the facilities and the closures, which can be dictated by early snow. North Rim

Well on the train ride up from Williams,Az. We enjoyed it! Nuff said!! Never been to the west side, Sky Walk,, but heard it is very nice too! The N. Rim will be along way out of your way, but if you have the time, great scenery! The south rim is very cool, and do not forget to check out the museum, and the live shows!

I like the North better, but either one is wonderful!

The North Rim is far from anything else, but it's a beautiful drive. And the route is through national forest, so you can camp anywhere you like, if you are comfortable boondocking. There are good quality paved or dirt roads going off to the sides, and the land is flat. You can find your own private canyon rim.
