Thanks again for the responses. The whole charging thing makes sense. The battery does fine for the first few days of my trip and then it begins to lose its charge. I usually do most of my driving at the beginning and then I'm driving shorter distances.
I took my rig into my local shop. We're going to toss the existing 12v battery and put in two 6v AGM batteries. No custom fabrication necessary. One will go in the existing compartment. The other will go inside the coach. I'm going to look into solar as well. Any suggestions on solar systems for a smaller RV?
Johnny,
You are on the right track, keep going that way and include a real battery monitor in the program. These go by names like Trimetric, Victron and Xantrex to name a few. It will cost you about 200$us for the device and installing it along with you new house bank should be very affordable.
The best thing is that you will quickly learn what your batteries are doing. NO Guessing anymore.
With a house bank of two golf cart batteries, you should be able to run the heat and the computer the first night off the road, but I doubt that you will be able to run the second without charging.
Good Luck Johnny.
