Occasional speedometer issues

Every now and then for unknown reasons my speedometer reads about 5 MPH higher than is accurate. I have a GPS that displays my speed, and most of the time it is right on. Sometimes it will be OK and suddenly jump from reading say 65 MPH to read 70 MPH. The GPS reads 65. Hard to fix something that only breaks sometimes. Anyone know how the speedo gets its signal, mechanical or electrical? I figure someday it will stay broken, and would like to know what to look at for repairs.

  • I had a Subaru that did that on the freeway but it would go all the way up to 100 + MPH and stay there until I stopped then it would work again.

I told the cop that pulled me over the speedometer was acting up and he let me go!
  • My speedo and GPS are very close ( 1 or 2 MPH different), no issues. Be going along , same speed nothing changes except the speedo jumps 5-6 mph faster, may or may not drop back down. Not trying to match it with GPS, just using the GPS as a control unit.

    Here's hoping.

My GPS is always slower than my speedometer. The reason I know is a couple of years ago I was coming off a mountain in Oregon, the GPS said I was doing 68 MPH. The Highway patrol said he clocked me at 77 MPH. No, I did not get a ticket. Sped limit was 65. So needless to say I don't rely on the GPS speed.
