Odometer Problems

Hope someone can understand this: 2005 Itasca Horizon 40AD
When we bought the MH it had 56200 miles showing on odometer.
We had some work done bout a year after we bought the motor home. Work was on slides and was told they hooked some wires up that were not hooked up underneath the coach, never did quite understand that. Didn't pay any attention to mileage until we headed for TX. We noticed the odometer reading wasn't showing or so we thought. We thought the little switch was not letting us switch between trip mileage and odometer reading. We didn't worry bout it and I kept trying to clear the 7462 showing as I thought that was trip mileage I hadn't cleared. We ordered a new switch thinking it had gone bad, a few months ago. Finally got time to take apart and there was a wire off the little switch in dash. We put it back on and it seemed to be working but what I thought was trip mileage was the odometer reading! I checked the triptek (sp) and got the reading and it is the same as what is showing on odometer! This 7462 reading is close to miles we have put on since having the work done. Is there any way possible that they reset the odometer when messing with wires and such? I have our title of course with miles when be bought it but we can't figure out what has happened!
We are getting ready to put it up for sale and would really like to figure this out!
Thanks
  • I had a similar issue with our 2006 Newmar Ventana on a Freightliner chassis. During a trip, I noticed the odometer "lost" 52,139.8 miles. I called Freightliner and was told how the access the mileage stored in the engine control module. That was how I was able to determine the exact error. They said that there was no way to correct the odometer display and if the display were replaced, the new one would start at zero. Seemed strange but that is what I was told. I made a label to put under the odometer display show the number of miles needed to be added for the correct mileage and there was no problem when I traded it in. I have no idea why it happened and the number it reset to had no significance that I could determine. It was something like 1100 miles. I record the mileage at every refueling, so it happened between pit stops.
  • Freightliner chassis? Yes, it's possible they reset. My odometer has reset twice on my RV. I think it's reading about 2500 miles right now and that's a 10 year old motorhome. Per Freightliner there is nothing they can do to reset the odometer to it's actual mileage. However, the onboard computer system does keep track of the real miles. Last time I had my RV into Freightliner for service I tried to get them to get me the real miles and they were unable to because they didn't have the right plug. I understand there is also a way to get the real miles out of the trip computer but you have to call Freightliner and they give you some code to access it.
  • Rich, mine reset to zero both times. Do you have the procedure still for getting the miles out of the engine control module?
  • I don't remember what the programmable aux display was called where you could display various data like speed, rpm, gear, etc, but there was a menu option for system or maintenance that you could work your way to that asked for a password. From there the mileage stored could be determined. The tech on the help line walked me through it. I no longer have the details
  • Thanks a bunch and guess i'll be calling Freightliner to see if they can walk me through it. We just had it in and never even thought about asking them! CRS moment!
