I've been following your search since the first post and it's a tough one. Your question today is easy to answer as I have often posted that I would take a 10-year-old higher end DP over a new gas motor home any day for the same amount of money. I'm at 11 years and 70,000 miles and see no reason why it will not go to another 11 years and 70,000 miles without major expenses. To not go with a tag axle unit because of two more tires is poor advise at best as you need all of the CCC you can get. Do not go with a tag axle because of USFS campgrounds etc. is poor advise also as that is where we stay most of the time. Limiting the size of the van that you can tow because A unit can only tow 4000 pounds is not smart either.
You want a rig with a residential refrigerator.
100+ gallons of fresh water.
A booth dinette.
Although I like our four slideouts I would recommend a unit with only one slideout in the living room. You need the extra room while traveling which four slides limits. The fourth slide limits the size of the of the awning and you need as large of one as possible.
Hope this helps and good luck.
Now that I see the above post it is something I've thought of since your first post. Yes there will be some issues in campgrounds and exterior expense but the extra room will be invaluable.
