Older Ford Class C Fuel Pump Question

Hi All - Quick question regarding the in-tank fuel pumps on the older Ford Class C's

I have a lovely 23' 94 Minnie Winnie E350 460 V8 with 60k mi on her. Purchased her last year and did a bunch of maintenance and put new tires on it, prior owner has kept it in great shape and his been a lovely little RV for my family.

Couple questions:
1.) Does anyone know if this was part of the years where they had vapor lock issues with the in-tank fuel pump?
2.) Did Ford ever come up with a fix or new part number to replace the pumps that were susceptible to vapor lock?

Thanks all!

  • Our fix was to buy a late(r) model Lincoln 460 mechanical fuel pump and install it into the E-350 460 block (remove the blank off plate and install the fuel pump) then plumb inline with the electric fuel pump (ours was outside the tank).

Solved our loss of power that masqueraded as vapor lock. It really was the hot fuel diverter valve that would dump too much of the fuel into the return line and back to the tank, robbing the carb of enough fuel to perform on hot days with long mountain pulls.
  • Had a problem with the fuel pump on the front tank after less than a year it would stop working after just a few hours. Turned out it was not vapor lock. The tank had fine silt in the bottom and it would cause the pump to overheat after a few hours of running before failing completely. The rubber connector from the fill to the tank and the vent line had minor cracks in them that allowed road grime to enter tank.
  • Your answers are:
    1. Yes
    2. Yes

The problem was not vapor lock directly but the pumps got weak and could not maintain full pressure which could result in vapor lock, however, many pumps would simply overheat and stop pumping. Let it cool down and it would start running again - same symptoms as vapor lock.
The new pump style was introduced in 1997 which is more durable and not prone to overheating.
  • I had a 94 class A on a ford chassis with 460. I had vapor lock and it turned out to be fuel regulator, not pump
  • Don't have a direct answer but we had an electric booster pump installed on our 79 Delta Chevy powered rig to cure slow starting and vapor lock.
