Onan 7000 Generator

I need to know if there is any maintenance tips for this unit on my Class A home. It has 1100 hours on it, leaks a bit and will not run for more than 12 hours in 90 degree heat running only 2 air units on RV. I am told that it should and am wondering if there is something I can do to help this situation.

Also, if I am moving with the unit running and the air on, both units, after 20 miles it shuts down. Seems like it is overheating and at only 90 degrees, I feel it shouldn't.

Does anyone have any maintenance tips to help?

  • We did some 'air' cleaning to it and got another new filter. Learned not to run the generator while going down a dirt road. It sucked in a lot of dirt into the intake and filter that we just couldn't blow out. Seems to be working a lot better, but am getting ready for a 3 week trip to Florida so will be using it more as we drive toward the heat from Missouri
  • If you have operators manual it will explain how to retrieve fault codes
and give a basic list of codes and related problems. A full service manual has much more detail. info can be had on-line,
  • Yes, it is a 7HGJAB-900C

and No, I do not know about how to run fault codes. Can you tell me how?
  • We work on quite a few of these units at our shop, and warmer weather seems to bring out this type of problem. Typically they are fuel pump related. Do you know how to read fault codes on your set Assuming it is a later model 7HGJAB ? We find usually get a code 36 on these shutdowns, and fuel pump gets hot and stops pumping, or control board overheats and quits sending voltage to pump. Usually will start and run ok after everything cools off. Do not try to run with service door removed, thinking it will run cooler....will only make things worse.
we have relocated fuel pump on some sets, to cooler location, with some success. as far as cleaning, maybe stiff brush and shop vac, or some air pressure. Would be very careful with water around generator/control end, and you dont want to get water/ grease down on drive belt or pulleys
  • With common sense, you can clean it up. But it has been known that an anvil can be destroyed with a feather.

  • It is Gas. Do not know why it stops. I just purchased this unit in May. Has oil/dirt build up around the engine. Can I wash this off and not hurt anything? Seems to me that it would cool better if this wasn't there. But don't know how much to clean with water/etc.
  • After the 12 hour run time, why does it stop? Over heat or oil pressure ?
After 1100 hours, highly suggest having the valves checked / adjusted.
Does it use LP Gas or gasoline ?
