onan generater won't start

My onan generater won't start. The oil in it is up to the fill line. The gas tank has 18 gal. in it. Is that enough gas in a 1995 National Seabreeze, Ford 460 engine, model 131? It's over 1/4 of a tank.

  • It's a good reason to exercise the generator every opportunity you can. I have got into the habit of starting it and running at least 1 ac on it every time we pull into a rest area. The saying 'use it or lose it' really does apply here.

Stuck carb float would be my first guess assuming it is getting fuel in the first place - cracking the joint at the fuel input to the carb and spinning the engine will tell you if it is.
  • mlw5000, how long has it been sitting? Does it crank and not start, or will it not crank at all?
  • Disconnect the fuel line at the carb and hit the "prime" switch. If gas comes out, you're not down to the minimum level. I'm having trouble with mine at the moment ('02 Onan Emerald 5500). It fires, but spits out great gobs of white smoke then dies after a few seconds.

Due to medical issues, it sat from mid-December past year to early May without being exercised. I think the carb float valve is letting fuel into the float bowl and flooding the engine. New plugs are already black with carbon.

We don't use the genny except when we need both a/cs, which is very rarely. At 8 years old when be bought the rig, the generator only had 48 hours on it and it's only 50 and a bit now.

Daughter and room-mate are using the MH for a base camp at a soccer tournament - we should get it back Saturday, so i can work on it some more!
  • check the fuse on the engine panel that one will let it start but as soon as you let the starter switch go it will go dead.

I assume you mean the oil is up to the FULL line?
Maybe try putting more gas in the tank. Maybe your gas gauge in not accurate.
How old is the generator fuel filter? Did you replace it?
Did you check to see if it's getting fuel to the carburetor?
These are simple things to check first.
