Onan Genset error code #25...

Just started my Onan genset for it's monthly exercise and after running a minute or so, it shut down with a 3 code, and on pressing 'Stop', 2 flashes and 5 flashes. So a level 3-#25 fault. Went to my Operator's manual and the code indicates "Engine above speed target". With a 'see dealer' recommendation.

Tried starting again 10 minutes later...same thing, shutdown and fault code. Tried again 20 minutes after that, and that time it kept running and now it's still running 1 hour and 45 minutes later. Voltage is rock steady at 124 V, and the output current has varied from 4 amp to 22 amp as I tried different loads. Engine adjusts as expected.

My model and serial number sticker is missing from the genset but I believe it is a QD7500, HDKAJ type.

My question is whether or not anyone thinks this is just a matter of needing to be exercised more often (it only has 198 hours on it and it should have 336), or perhaps there is a certain maintenance procedure that is needed?

Anyone have thoughts about or experienced the #25 code? Thanks!
  • Sounds like your fault code indicated an engine Overspeed.
Probably nothing you can do. Just run it and see if it faults again.
Could be an actual Overspeed or in the monitoring circuit.

Not sure of your climate. Maybe caused by dampness.
Run it for an hour under a heavy load.
