Onan or Generac?

I found a 2006 LTV Free Spirit for a great price, $32K, but no generator nor was one ever installed.
I have it in my head that I can have one installed for under $6K. That puts me at $38K with a new genny. Everything else with the LTV is flawless for a 2006 with 60K miles.

1) What's wrong with this plan? Is there more to it that I'm not seeing? Can the wiring, fuel line, transfer switch, etc be easily installed after the fact?

2) Onan or Generac? If you had your choice of propane generator which would you choose and why?

Thanks

Were it me, and if I had the VIN number, I'd call the factory and ask (OK, hope) that the wiring for a genset was installed at the time of the buildout, even though no genset was ordered.

    Some manufacturers do, some don't.

If the wiring harness was installed at buildout, then adding a genset would be relatively straightforward. If not, well, things would get a bit more complicated.

Separately, as to Onan or Generac - though I'm partial to Onan - I'd install exactly what would have been installed at buildout if one were ordered at that time.

    YMMV.

    Cheers.

Sounds like good advice to me and the folks at Leisure are very helpful. I know that the gen was an option according to the 06-07 brochure, and I'd be surprised if it didn't have the connections in place. But they should be able to tell you up at the factory in Winkler.

Ours came with an Onan, and it has worked very well with no problems other than balking once at starting when temps were in the 20s.

  • I would check to see if it is pre-wired and what for. We bought a 88 Class C, that the generator compartment had been used for storage, but pre-wired for an Onan unit with the start switch already in place as were the fuel lines and base plate. When I found used one it slid right in and was an easy hookup.

The Onan generator I bought was "new" with less than 10 hours that had been parked on the beach in Florida when the tide came in. The rear section with control board had been partially submerged and the generator was replaced by insurance. Took a chance and bought it for $200 from the Rv dealer who removed it. I had it checked out by an Onan service center in Indianapolis, all it took was the board, a small section of wiring harness and I bought an exhaust system all for around $500. At $700 it was a great deal for the 8-9 years we used it.
  • I have had both. No problems with either. If I had to choose I would choose Onan just becaues there is an Onan dealer close to my house.
