Onan Trouble

I have a 94 four winds class c rv with an onan emerald plus 4000 genset. It was working perfect then suddenly stopped after I replaced the starter. I am not getting spark to the plugs when the engine in cranking over but when it stoppes cranking I get a spark. Any one have an idea where I should start troubleshooting.

  • O.K, I checked the coil resistance this morning and found that is was way out of proportion according to the Cummings/onan manual so I ordered one. I will let you all know if this works when I receive the part.
  • I did replace the starter with the same one as well as tried to run RV while turning over generator. I will try to test coil in the morning but I heard they rarely go bad. I don't know but I have to start somewhere, and thank you tenbear and Tyrone for the response.
  • If the batteries are weak mine will crank and crank and never start. I have learned on mine that if it cranks but will not start to start the RV let it run for just a minute or two leave it running and then start the generator.

PLEASE for everyone's learning please post what corrects the problem.
  • Did you replace the starter with the same as the original? The starter on my generator draws about 50A. Maybe the starter is now drawing more current and lowering the voltage available for generating the spark.

I really don't know much about generators but I always suspect the change I just made if something was working and after the change, its not.
