Diesel fuel for many years was cheaper then gasoline, then it switched around to where diesel was more expensive then gasoline.
NOW diesel here in Barstow, Ca. is like forty cents a gallon cheaper then regular gasoline.
And you are correct when you post that diesel should be cheaper. Gasoline is a refined fuel compared to diesel.
