Turning on a branch breaker should not have any effect on the ems. It should have its control wired directly to the incoming buss.
Look closely at the 120/240 panel in the rig. there should be a double pole main, then to left and right would be the branch breakers. On the side with the one for the washer is there another or does the washer circuit feed something else?
Sounds like the neutral is be fed through the second power phase device.
