Propane Level Indication?

The one we had in our Winnebago Via had an actual analog gauge on the tank that required climbing under the chassis to look at

Just worked on a 1990 Fleetwood with the same setup. That gauge is as useless as the black tank meter - even more so.

My 09 Cambria propane tank level indicator fluctuates constantly. I have a gauge on the tank visible with a light and small mirror as a back up.

If you use some propane, you should might be able to see dew form on the tank and you can see where the dew line stops.

Ok, thanks all. I will go to a propane station to be sure it is full before we go anywhere in the MH. Be time enough later to see if the monitor works and if there is another down by the tank somewhere.

There is some LP in the tank as seen by getting all the appliances to work for sure on LP, and it was recertified in August before we got it. Just a matter now to make sure it is not nearly empty. Don't need that sort of surprise. :(

It's easier to look at the gauge on the tank, assuming it's halfway accessible. This often will have a little black blob thingy with wires that partly obscures it; that blob is the sender for the indicator inside the motorhome. At least on my Coachmen motorhome, the gauge on the tank is pretty accessible, being next to the fill port and shut-off valve and so forth behind a door on the motorhome skirting.

Unlike the sensors for the other tank levels, the sender for the propane is usually an actual variable resistor arrangement so it should be entirely possible to rig up a more precise gauge than the little light panel. (The water tank sensors are just contacts spaced in the tank, so you can't get any more precision out of them without changing out the entire system.)

I just had to go out and look! Dark out. Anyway there it was by the shut off valve. A tiny little round glass or plastic gauge a little bigger than a quarter with tiny blurry writing inside and a red marker needle. Has one red wire attached to it at the bottom. perhaps it is grounded to the frame via the tank?

Of course right at the distance where my bifocals don't work so I used a magnifying glass with a flashlight and I think I saw a blurry 1/4 up to the left at about 10 o clock and a 3/4 down around 3 o clock and an F just past that at 4 o clock? The red needle is just above the 3/4 mark at 2 o clock ----all blurring in and out of focus :(

There is a bunch of even tinier writing around the dial--can't read it.

So that means this gauge says the tank is almost 3/4 full, while the idiot light level says it is Full?

Can I trust that tank gauge?

Tanks are only filled to 80% and show full on a remote gauge and the glass gauge on the tank itself shows about 3/4 when full on mine.

Use your cell phone to take a photo of the gauge. Then you can enlarge the photo for a clear view.

I can go over 30 days on one tank of propane. I use it for all cooking, the fridge, and the water heater (which is on the entire time I am camping). Unless you're using the propane heater, it doesn't run out quickly.

I ran out once just after I set up at a campsite. I just took a quick trip to a close by RV park and got my tank filled.
