I appreciate all the posts and opinions. Since a "B" is out of the question, the next best thing is a short "C" with a slideout, and I'm not really limiting myself to a brand or chassis type. If I have the choice, I'd prefer a Ford chassis because it is less expensive, and a 55 gallon gas tank (really 40 gallons for the generator) will keep the A/C going a long time in the Texas heat. However, there isn't anything wrong with a Sprinter chassis.
After looking at a Solera 24R, I'd say that Winnebago is a step above in quality (especially in their documentation), but Forest River does a lot of improvements throughout the year, so if one is handy, a FR rig may be a decent choice for the money, once it gets past the initial teething issues.
As for floorplans, since I'm single, and most of these short "C"s have two, if not three sleeping surfaces (if one counts the cabover, a corner queen is fine with me.
