Oregon Hiway 42 from Winston to Coos Bay?

38 ft motor home towing a car. How is the road from I-5 near Winston OR. to Coos Bay? Thanks
  • Thanks for the replies, so do doable, I'll head out that way.
    Thanks again. Brian
  • Just got off hwy 42 from I5 to 101 in Coos Bay 2 days ago. The road is good surface, 40 ft wide in many places, narrow shouldered, curvy, and winds down through river valleys toward the coast from the Oregon coastal mountain range. All forested and elevation drop is about 700 feet from I5 to 101. We do this highway all the time and it is a good route but curvy. Traffic not bad but watch out for the "chip hauling semi trucks and log trucks. Average rv speed probably about 40-45 in the narrow parts of the route.
  • Curvy curvy but a fun drive. It's just what you make of it.
  • Good road. We have traveled it many times. I try to be at Winston around lunch time so I have an excuse to stop at the Dairy Queen for a flame thrower and blizzard. Truck traffic can get a little impatient as I tend to drive slower than them.

Very curvy,, and close. your best is I-5 to the Yoncalla cutoff just down the hill/Rice hill, Hwy 796 to 38 the 38 is a good road and better condition.

Second option is to continue to the Hwy 38 cut off Drain ,off I-5.

    Take care.

Wow, good example of differing opinions. We look forward to getting off I-5 to enjoy the beauty of hwy 42.
  • You'll have no problem. Our MH is just under 40' and we tow a Rubicon. Make this trip at least 6 times a year. Seat Back and enjoy the ride.

I drove that last year to the FMCA rally there's nothing scary about it. Just winds around the mountains and right through some small towns and I thought it was enjoyable. I drove back the same way.

I too have drive this in February of 2015 and it was no problem
