I bought a set of cable chains for around $150. I never plan on using them but if I am stopped by highway patrol I have them. If I get caught in a bad spot I can always put them on to get me somewhere safe. When I towed my fiver I always carried a cheap set with me for the same reason. In my years of trucking in Northern B.C. I chained up enough to last me a lifetime.
Usually if the weather is bad though the passes you can wait it out and travel the next day without incident.
