Oregon in Late March

We are booked in for factory service in Coburg, Oregon on March 24. We will be coming from the Desert Hot Springs area. Was wondering what would be the best route to take. The I-5 through California, the I-101, or go up through Nevada and through Bend, Oregon

Also have heard that I would need Chains for the Coach, which would suck, cause I would only have to drive one day in Oregon in March. Won't be leaving Oregon until after the first week in April

Also what can we expect weatherwise while in Oregon

Thanks Trap

  • I would go I-5 and keep an eye on the weather for the Siskiyou pass between California and Oregon and maybe leave a few days ahead of time if the weather looks good. The coast 101 would be a bear with a 43' coach. I am hoping for sunshine next month because we have to make a trip to Junction City also for a day, I hope.

  • As you head north on I5 check Tripcheck for the latest road conditions over the Siskiyous. Look at the cameras and you will see how traffic is doing. If it looks bad, simply stay a night in Redding and unless the weather is terrible it will only last a day.
  • You can avoid the Siskiyous if you go 101, but it will slow you down. The drive up the coast is great though, southern part is not nearly as busy as north of Florence. If you do head that way I'd head back to I-5 via Highway 38 (Umpqua Hwy) not Highway 126 - Hwy 38 is a much smoother easier drive, 126 has been in need of serious widening and smoothing out for over a decade.

Used to be if you bought chains at a Les Schwab Tire Stores you could return them for a refund if you didn't use them. I couldn't verify this on their website though, but it might be worth a call. There have stores all over the NW and a large number in CA too.

That time of year in Oregon can be a real mixed bag. We've spent spring break in Florence OR for the past 10 years and I grew up in Eugene. There are times the weather is wonderful, 60's no rain and there are times you wonder if the rain will ever stop. It's totally hit or miss, be prepared for rain and you'll be happy if it doesn't.
  • I-5 isn't bad until you get to the Siskiyou pass between California and Oregon. Sometimes it's not bad and other times you will need chains to make it over. The best bet would be to keep an eye on the weather and the pass conditions. If you take 101 you wouldn't need to worry much about the weather but it's a slow drive with all the small towns you would have to drive through. You would still need to go over a pass in the coastal range to get back over to I-5. Coming up through Nevada and Bend is an option as well but once again you'll need to cross over a pass in the Cascade range. In short you're going to have to climb a pass as some point. If it were me I'd take I-5 and keep an eye on the weather and pass conditions and plan my trip accordingly.

As for weather in the Eugene / Springfield area in March. I'd plan on 50's and overcast with frequent or steady rain. It's been pretty dry so far this winter so you could get lucky.
