Over heated 30 Amp AC Plug

I've been living in this, new to me, '98 Dolphin for about 8 weeks while making some Mod's, repairing and getting ready for that first full-timing trip next week.

Since I'm in the Houston area, the A/C runs pretty much non-stop and has been running great hooked to shore power.

Yesterday I took a 70 mile round trip to get a new tow dolly. For the first time, I started up the generator so I could use the A/C to keep me and my dogs cool. It seemed to work fine. The dash A/C does not work.

When I returned to the RV Park and removed the plug from the generator, to plug back into shore power, the plug and some length of the cable were very hot. Too hot for bare hands. I let it cool for a bit then used a gloved had to plug it into the pedestal.

I noticed what appeared to be melted plastic had oozed onto one of the flat pins. I also noticed that the back of the plug, which is secured by a single bolt to the front, was loose. Looks like it's been replaced before.

Now.... I'm going to replace the plug tomorrow when I have it at Camping World for some service.

Can anyone clue me in to why this would overheat from the generator but perform OK on Shore Power? Maybe the receptacle is worn/loose? Should I replace the receptacle as well?

Thanks,

Mike
  • The first thing to check would be how tight the electrical connections are where you plug into the generator. A loose connection can create a lot of heat. Another thing is the wire was probably wrapped up tight in a small compartment while there is air circulation when plugged in at the CG.
