Overheating on E350

If you have a 1975 to 1991 E350 and have been experiencing overheating issues you might not be overheating. Our random overheating issues were not overheating it was the instrument cluster voltage regulator experiencing intermittent failure .
If your temperature gauge suddenly spikes up check to see if your fuel gauge has spiked to past full also. Then using a infrared thermometer measure the temperature of the upper radiator hose.

  • I have the opposite problem on my '92 F350.

The coolant temp gauge reads normal at normal actual temp, but it just barely goes up, while the actual coolant temp has risen drastically, to the point of boiling. Can't trust the gauge to warn me of anything.

The truck had a bad fan clutch, but the gauge didn't warn me of the overheating. I was towing in hot weather. By the time I suspected a problem, a head gasket had already blown.
  • Good tip. We have a bit newer Ford E 350 and the temp gauge bounces around on the bottom of cold most of the time. I replaced the thermostat when it first seemed to be a problem, but it did not help. So I'm guessing there is something wrong with the gauge. We have a scan gauge so I have not gotten it fixed.
