I don't feel the need to 'own' a lot in a resort. We certainly enjoy staying in them though! We have friends that have bought lots in Resorts and it works for them.
We frequent the Las Vegas Motorcoach Resort in Las Vegas, NV, quite often. We have been going their since 2008 and have never felt any of the owners to be 'clickish' or maybe I just didn't notice. I kinda like my privacy and don't socialize a lot as we are out during the day and relax at night in the motorhome after going to dinner.
I'm fine with paying $65-$80 a night (depending on how the lot is developed), staying for a week 4 or 5 times a year. If we chose the more expensive lot for 5 weeks that's about $2,800 (can't remember the tax rate) and then when we leave, we're done..... don't have to think about a thing.
Normally, I don't care to have a full equipped site as we don't cook, we eat out as Las Vegas has a ton of great restaurants. It seems to me that the people of the LVMR are friendly from the front desk to the guards. We have never had a problem getting a site after all these years. In fact, I think they still have a few lots available that never sold originally that stay in the rental pool.
If we wanted to stay longer in one place, then I might consider a purchase but we like to move along. Aging might change that! LOL!
