My question was hopeful in getting feedback from people in other situations. Thus the question are they all the same? Not saying I'm buying in this particular situation, which I'm not.
Although I don't own one, I have looked at them myself. And of course they are not all the same. With the exception that all are going to have some type of fees to be paid to maintain the place. Location is probably going to be the biggest factor in determining what those fees will be. You can probably find something in North Dakota without anywhere near those fees. Or you can find one in Palm Springs with quadruple those fees.
Personally, if I was a full timer, I'd probably buy one. And that in mainly so I can have a place to call home that I know I can always come back to. And I'd probably get one of the more expensive ones in a nice area. For example I'd love to own on in Palm Springs and just spend the entire winter there, and then travel in the north for the summer. But the prices in Palm Springs are even out of my reach. I saw a nice place on Hilton Head Island. I don't recall the monthly costs, but the prices of the lots didn't seem that bad. That would be a nice place to call home. And the nice thing about there is there would be a good rental market year round, so you could probably cover a lot of your expenses renting it out when you're not there.
