I can't comment on the OP's situation as it sounds like the resort he is looking at is more like a commune pooled thing or something.
We bought a lot in outdoor resorts palm springs 10 or 11 years ago. Nice spot. We come and go during the winter and it makes a nice base when not travelling. They are easy to rent out during prime time. Around 355 per month. There is no developer or owner as they were sold out 20 years ago. Well maintained and free golf till you drop. The golf alone saves us about 500 to 700 per month when we are there. Top notch facilities. Its freehold so no different than owning a condo or whatever. Property taxes around 1000 a year.
My only advice would be to buy a really nice lot and not something cheap in a bad location. We don't anticipate selling for another 10 or 15 years but when we do it will be easier and quicker than a less desirable lot in a less desirable location of the resort.
Its a piece of real estate so expect to go up and down with the trends. If you are in for the long term then who cares. If I sell it for what I bought it for after twenty years it will have done what it was supposed to do. A nice place to roost with good facilities when you need a break from the road. Don't let anyone tell you that you won't travel after you buy it. For us it is an enhancement to the life style not a detriment.
