Checking takes two people.
With engine OFF, have someone turn the steering wheel side to side in ever increasing arcs. You want to see what has play in it between steering box and the right wheel (last thing in the "chain").
If play in steering box, suggest you have a professional adjust it. Too tight and you can destroy the box.
X2 don't just guess. There are probably a number of things loose.
BTW: On the steering gear box, there are many who will tighten the allen screw, however it is impossible to do it accurately inside the chassis. You must remove the box, otherwise you can not feel the drag properly. Also before adjusting the allen screw, you need to adjust the end play ( up and down movement of the input shaft) I would also add that if many other parts are worn, it will be likely the box is worn too far to remove all the slop.
Incidentally, the last box I bought from Carquest was loose brand new out of the box. Not bashing Carquest, just pointing out that the professionals don't always get it right either. It is a very precise adjustment.
