P30 Chassis Steering Wear

Wondering where to begin with my '84 P-30 chassis. I took it on its first trip this past weekend - 300 miles round trip. The new engine performed beautifully, but the rig needs some front end work. I intend to put new springs and air bags in it, as well as ball joints if needed. There's substantial banging around up there when I go over bumps. Not sure what it is, but it's on both sides.

My real question is around steering. There is substantial play in the steering that has the thing wandering around on the highway. It's a bit of a handful to keep going straight. Jacking up one wheel at a time and wigging the tire shows that there is play but I'm not sure how to pin-point it. What are the common wear items on these things? I know on the GM cars the center links (drag links) go bad. On this, it appears as if there is play in both relay housings. Thankfully it does not look like the relay arms themselves are bad (they're discontinued and very expensive from Super Steer). Maybe just the bushings in the housings? There are grease fittings everywhere, too. Would that tighten things up or is it a band-aid?

Any advice would be appreciated. I need to tighten it up before my next trip.
  • Just realized that Super Steer IS Henderson's. Explains the similar pricing :)

Yes, my driver's side is either shot or needs bushings. I can see a lot of movement there and the passenger side as well. They look like they're still available from GM though (L and R are the same). I was wondering whether I should roll the dice on bushings or just replace the whole bell crank.

Super Steer has springs, too. Not sure whose is better? Pricing seems to be about the same.

  • Thanks for the replies.

I'll have my brother help me with the visual diagnosis.

The bags are shot and it's leaning to the left a bit. For some reason they put all the heavy stuff on the left side - holding tanks, fresh water tank and 80 lb. propane tank. I'm going to replace the bags and coils.

Good point on the sway bar bushings. The left one is beat - I found a new one in the storage compartment. The previous owner must have intended on replacing it.
  • check the sway bar bushings in the mounting brackets... probably shot and they will really make a racket when the ends hit the lower control arm... cheap fix..
  • Also make sure front air bags have air. Inside coil springs. Will make a big difference in handling. About 70 psi in them.
  • You really don't want our speculation on what is worn.

    Checking takes two people.

With engine OFF, have someone turn the steering wheel side to side in ever increasing arcs. You want to see what has play in it between steering box and the right wheel (last thing in the "chain").

If play in steering box, suggest you have a professional adjust it. Too tight and you can destroy the box.
  • Ball joints. You can get heavy duty ones and it will give you peace of mind. It does'nt matter if they have grease zerks or not as they seem to wear at the same rate.
