Pikes Peak and my Roadtrek 210

Hello all,

We have a 2008 210 Popular in excellent mechanical shape. We live in the gulf coast area and our rig would not be set for elevation. I am not sure if this is an issue or not.

I would like to know if others have taken their Roadtreks up the road to the top of Pikes Peak? We did this 20 years ago with a rental car and I don't think there would be any issues, but wanted to hear if others have done so and hear their experiences

Thank to all...

Eric
  • If you do change the altitude screw on the Onan... make sure to change it back before firing it up once back down to lower elevations. Too rich a mixture isn't good for it.

The only generator I know that can handle 15,000 feet with ease would be a 2000 watt Honda with the 7000+ foot elevation jets. Even then, they will be drastically derated.

One thing, I bet your Onan generator will not run at 14,000 plus feet without a major change to the altitude adjusting screw.

Isn't that a 'So What'? Why would someone need to run their generator?

Someone could stay overnight and longer.

The Express Van engine is computerized in terms of altitude, so not a big deal. The weak link is the cooling system. Going up at those grades the radiator will not keep up with the cooling required, so a little slower determined by the temperature gauge on the dash.

    Have fun.

  • Thanks Wayne,

Pikes Peak - 14,114 ft. elevation - looks ok, but 42% loss in power...

It is still currently on our list for our 2 week trek to Yellowstone and back.

  • You typically lose 3% of your power for every 1000 ft of elevation. Unless you have a turbo of course. All that means is that you can not go quite as fast. I have been over 15000 a number of times, go for it and enjoy the drive.

  • You are probably correct... plan to go up there, take a few photos, and head back down.
