Planning ahead, for the end ...

My wife doesn't drive the MH but she can. If we are on the road and I am dead she will have more to worry about then the MH. Every one should know how to pack up and go and she does. she has driven and parked. That said, what she does when I'm gone is going to be up to her and she knows that, but who knows what she will do.

DW had same concerns. We bought a MASA membership a half dozen years ago. Provides worldwide air med evac if needed; useful to us as we have done several overseas RV tours. They also provide evac of spouse and RV in needed.

Not sure how they compare with FMCA Assist - just another option. I think Sky Med has similar services.

Fortunately, we haven't had to use MASA. A coverage that has been useful to us (didn't have to buy additional coverage) is for cruises.

In late 2009 I had two mornings in a row that I was "brought back" during my sleep by my Implanted Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) at about 5:30AM in Tucson AZ. After about 14+ hours over 2 days in 2 different emergency rooms and eventually talks between a local pacer nurse and my Cardio/Electro-Physiologist in Indianapolis needed adjustments the device I was released. The next morning which was uneventful Scottiemom, got behind the wheel of Phaeton Place and has driven it about 70,000 miles to my 600 since that day. I drive our B+ and cars/trucks, but not the 40' DP by personal choice. Since every time I had an "event" associated with my ICD, it meant no driving for 6 months, so I opted out since Scottiemom loves to drive. I navigate and surf campsites from the co-pilot's seat. My personal feeling is if you are going to RV weekends or fulltime any adult in the motorhome or toter should learn to drive it rather than be stranded.

This happens more often then you think in the snowbird circle. The times that I'm aware of no-one had a plan in place. Most often fellow RV'ers will take care of things, no questions ask, or payment expected.

There was one time where the DW after her husband suffered a massive stroke decided to continue the adventure. She did EVERYTHING and did a very fine job of it while her DH stayed inside. They had a nice DP, an American Eagle if I remember correctly. She never drove the rig prior to his stroke. They were seeing the USA as they planned during their working years.

My neighbor down south passed away, once again there was no plan in place. His wife decided to go FT. A fellow female snowbird hoped in the rig and the two of them drove back to Canada for the summer. In the fall she drove the rig south alone.

You do what you have to do.

Both hubby and I can drive the motorhome, understand the basic systems and maintenance, and ironically in a crisis the wife (me) likely knows more what to do in a crisis than him (LOL). Namely deep breath, don't panic and just get on with it.

We all tend to deal with whatever life throws at us and after every storm comes a rainbow eventually. Hubby will likely phone the daughter and follow her directions, albeit we've discussed and the ultimate goal would be to get back to family and take it from there.

Think it's imperative that we all live in the here and now as long as we can and worry less about the tomorrows that may never come. We know for sure that either one can handle driving the RV back to home base/family as well the deceased for the last journey together as much as legally possible too. Been together since I was 18, so perish the thought of our parting ever, albeit inevitable in reality..

Spent way too many years, planning and dreaming of going FT RVing together, and after seeing mum pass at 55 years, dad at 65 years and father in law at 68, we've both done all the forward planning we want to do for our lifetimes. We now intend to concentrate on living in the moment as long as we can heading into retirement, and whilst being sensible on budget and expenses, we don't intend to compromise when it comes to creating more memories to last us both the rest of our lives either.

For the exact reason you've started the OP, is the reason that both partners should be able to drive and understand and operate the MH. Just getting on with it and embracing it (I hate driving the RV with a passion but do so for the enjoyment it brings overall, and to know I can if need be) with practice, makes the worry of driving it to it's final location a non-starter.

In all reality if anything were to happen to DH, chances are very likely the RV would be sold or handed to family to enjoy.

Guess the bottom line is fear will either drive us forward or hold us back depending on what is the bigger fear. In this instance, "the fear of driving an RV" or the "fear of feeling stranded in the future". If the fears are equally weighted, or there's no alternative options available ie; insurance, family member to fly and drive back, then why would one RV in the first place to just live in fear of a future day that may or may not even materialize?

It doesn't really seem different than the RV life people live everyday:
Some plan every mile and stopover for an entire trip.
Others just go and travel where they feel like and stop when they need to.
Both types are comfortable with their arrangements.

I guess it is the same with being prepared for unforeseen life situations.
Some want everything planned out and taken care of prior to it happening.
Others will deal with it when it happens.

I doubt that worrying about an RV is top on anyone's priority in a serious health or death situation.

We both drove, taking turns constantly to stay comfortable with it. We both know how to do all the connections to the RV and the towed vehicle.

We don't understand why women think they can't do it. They drive cars just like men do. Men and women have the same skills with a car. You don't need to be a big strong guy to drive a RV. There's no strength involved. Yes, the first few times are tense - for BOTH men and women - even if the guy doesn't say so. However, the more you do it the more comfortable it is. Don't just drive it a few times and say "I can drive it". You need to keep up with it. If you don't know the steps to take, make some cards and keep them by the dash.

As far as selling a RV - the best would be to have a relative or close friend help you. You could also take it to a consignment - PPL in Houston is good - then there would be no hassles in selling it.

Things have a way of working out when the time comes. Deal with one thing at a time.

The way we look at this is not to spend life in worry. If something bad happens, that's what hotels and relatives are partly for. Plane ticket home and have a cousin go get the coach.
