We bought a 1996 Roadtrek Popular (Dodge) about 1 1/2 years age, with 60,000 miles on it. It was priced right in the average range. We took it to a mechanic for a prepurchase once over. Then to an RV place for their inspection. Both came with good reports. We bought it with not much haggling because i knew this was rare to find such a unit with no rust, or other issues plus it was only 10 miles from home! At the time of purchase, i also budgeted to replace the hoses & belt in the engine, as a matter of course. But i also set aside (on paper) another $2000 for unexpected repairs. I had to use some of that this year for a new fuel pump.
If you go the older route, it can be great, but just make allowance for repairs down the road, it can happen to new units also. One of the best things about older units is that you can customize them to your own specs. without worrying about if it would affect possible resale.
