Possible tire size change

I am beginning my purchase of new tires. Currently my 2002 Hurricane has 245/70R19.5 size tires. I am pricing, looking at load ratings etc. Besides load rating difference what is the pro/con of maybe going to a 225/70R19.5?

I will most likely stay with the 245 size but just want to get all my "I wonders" out of the way.

Thanks, Todd

  • The 225s are a smaller diameter resulting in a numerically lower gear ratio speedometer will be off 3-5 mph at 60 mph, I know since I went from 225s to 245s on a F450. Unless you are looking for a lower gear ratio don't do it. JMO
  • Yes that's what I figured. I was mostly just curious as well as while we were out looking at possibly upgrading the motorhome I saw some new ones about the same size as mine with 225's on them. Just wanted to get my hunches backed up with likewise answers as well. Thanks.
  • It can end up being dangerous to change tire sizes......especially when going to a smaller size.

    NOT GOOD.

Higher load rating, maybe. Different size, never on my machine.
  • The 225's seem to be designed for 6.0 " rims. The 245's ask for 6.75 rims.

Most people go up for a higher safety factor. Why go down?

What does the decal say? What size rig and frame size?
