We always thought Fort Wilderness was a vacation destination for one or two weeks. Am I reading right that folks stay for months? That must be very expensive. What do you do during all that time? And the constant traffic and crowds. Just curious.
We are missing our first Christmas there, having done the last eleven straight. There are people there that spends months, and more. There is a whole fascinating culture of folks who show up with massive enclosed storage trailers, filled with their own decorations, and spend weeks and thousands of dollars, setting up their sites for Halloween, and then Christmas. There are folks who think nothing of booking months at a time, and many years ago a security guy showed us a site that was rented year round. He claimed that there were no discounts, or special treatment, for the high rollers who dropped tens of thousands a year there. If you get the chance, get one of the employees talking about what goes on behind the scenes when it comes to those with lots of money and a Fort wilderness fetish, it's pretty fascinating.
