I have no idea where to look to see if the burner is lit? Does the burner ignite automatically or do I light it?

If the stove is difficult to light that’s a pretty good indication of air in the lines. I sometimes have trouble lighting my frig and I light the stove burners for a few minutes. Seems to help even though the frig should be another line. If the burner's lighting I leave it to someone more knowledgeable to give you some input.
