Propane smell in refrigerator

Need help. We recently noticed a slight whiff of propane coming from the refrigerator when we close the door. We are connected to A/C. I had the propane lines tested by a tech, and there is no leakage. I also checked the 10% valve at the tank and it was tight. I plan to have a tech test the system with a propane sniffer when I get home, but was wondering what I possibly could be missing. Any ideas?
  • could it be some food in the fridge going bad?

The propane flame heats up a black tank filled with ammonia on the back side of your fridge to cool it. Anything that leaks inside the fridge would probably be ammonia which doesn't smell like propane at all... Some say AMMONIA smells something like cat pee.. Others say strong oder of urine with added cabbage (according to google search)...

I guess it might be possible to get a PROPANE smell inside the fridge from the propane burner lines and flame behind the fridge...

  • Are you sure it's a propane smell? Not ammonia or whatever your reefer uses as a refrigerant?

  • It sure smells like propane, not ammonia. We have turned off the propane at the tank for safety reasons and the smell is gone. Yes, the refrigerator stays cold.
  • Is fridge in a slide out.........check propane flex line?

Is stove/oven close to fridge....check that all knobs are off?

LP Detector........does it function....it should alarm if propane leak?

Check your batteries.........low water level, wet tops,, bulging sides?
  • I would get a cheap propane detector and stick it in the refrigerator. That is the extent of my knowledge! :h
  • Most fridges have a "slobber tube" to drain defrost moisture out side.
They are easy to crack and are a direct feed to the inside of the fridge.
    Good Luck, Mike

If it smells like propane check the knobs on your stove!! Very easy to bump those darn knobs into the on position when packing up your RV. Don't ask me how I know! :C
