Propane is a byproduct of natural gas and refining of gasoline. Natural gas prices have gone from $3 to over $5 due to demand because of cold weather. Propane is removed from gas in the processing and sold seperately. Therefore, the price of natural gas moves the price of propane. This is the coldest winter in a very long time in a lot of the country and natural gas is the main heating fuel for most of the country that is cold (NE excepted since they use a lot of fuel oil).
This is not an excuse for the higher prices, just an explanation of one reason why the prices have gone up. And, no, I am not in the oil and gas business but I live in an area where the natural gas industry and production is significant so I follow it pretty closely. Propane has almost doubled here in Oklahoma and rural folks that use it to heat filled up last fall at about two bucks a gallon and the refills are commonly over four bucks. Same for the prices for RVs and grill tanks.
