Just have to take a small moment to be proud...hubby has developed a problem this past year with his inner ear; it affects his balance and can flare into a full case of vertigo with no advance warning. So he isn't allowed to climb up on the roof of the s&b anymore...or the motorhome. I have never ever even thought about climbing up there. But I knew the importance of checking the roof at least once per year, so today I gave it a go.Yesterday I climbed to the top of the ladder and peeked over the top. "Yep, I think I can do it", I told DH. Pick up a tube of caulk in case I see anything requiring attention. Today, with temps hitting 72 degrees, I climbed on up and inspected the roof of our Tiffin Allegro! Found one screw that had zero caulk over it, cleaned and covered the screw with caulk. The I proceeded to also clean the rain gutters.I have always wondered how people got up there. Today I realized it looks harder then it actually is!! Whooohooo!!

I can only say....heck of a gal and that's the spirit!!!! If nothing else keep low on the roof and watch for trip points. The easiest way to fall is standing upright and tripping. There's nothing wrong with sitting and crawling around. When climbing and moving around obstacles always use an old safety rule of three points of contact at all times.3 points

CongratsOver the years the vertigo has set in for me also, most likely due to accidents on ladders, roofs. I'm with rjxj, I crawl around up there now days. I will say the MH is much more stable than a fifth wheel when on the roof or just plain old camping.

Woohoo!If you do fall, bend your knees. Try to sit or land on your knees --on the roof-- rather than go over the edge. But you won't fall. Heck, how often do you fall walking around on the groubd? It's the same thing :).

Be very thankful that you could physically drive your RV. Unfortunately, when we bought ours (used), we were enthusiastic enough about its condition, mileage and price that we never checked the ergonomics.

DW is not very tall (under 5') and what we found was that the steering column wasn't telescopic, the amount of column tilt was very small, the seat was much too long in the cushion and the seat had no vertical adjustment. Her feet didn't even reach the floor. Also, the pedal cluster wasn't adjustable like some Ford cars have.

Bottom line - there was no way to adjust things so she could drive it (even if she'd wanted to or had to). Our "get home if DH is incapacitated" plan was a one-way airline ticket for one of our sons-in-law (one of whom is already retired) to come and get us.

When things started to get too expensive to continue the lifestyle, the above issue was one more nail in the coffin that resulted in us selling up.

Way to go. I was able to talk my wife into washing the top of our 5th wheel. I weigh over 200 lbs and the way the roof flexed when I was on top concerned me. She's not comfortable with heights, but was able to get it done.

I had very similar issue with my inner ear. My bride discovered a method while doing and internet search as to why this might happen.
Take a look into the Epley Maneuver for vertigo. It worked for me immediately and I have not had a recurrence for over 6 months

By the way, congratulations on your trip to the roof!!! Great job!

I hope you do the driving as well. You don't need DH having a full case of vertigo when he's behind the wheel of a 40,000 lb. machine.

My DH gave up driving the rig 6 years ago after a couple of particularly scary heart episodes. He is quite capable but since I love to drive, he stepped back. He is the world's best navigator now.
