Purchasing from far away

So I'm wondering how many have had or needed to travel a distance to find and purchase a used motorhome. Option 1 I'm looking at about an 18hr drive 1 way and I have a trade which is a 5th wheel and I am looking at a class A and option 2 is out in Colorado which probably 30hrs 1 way. Is it an outrageous thought to look so far away? I'm so fed up with my local dealers and the inventory has nothing that fits our needs.
  • I did a 900 mile round trip, three times with the third trip bringing the coach home. The coach was the model, year range and within my budget limits so the drives were well worth it. For the right deal spending the money for airfare or an 18 hour drive I would consider.
  • For an outright purchase, of something unique, maybe halfway across the country, since I'm about in the middle of it. Or for purchase direct from factory. I've gone up to 20 hours, almost a week round trip, to look, visit the factory, discuss terms for ordering a custom build.

I don't know that I would go that far for something mass production, or anticipation of dealing on a trade sight unseen.
  • Just be prepared to walk away from the deal and drive your old rig all the way back home! After driving that distance with a trade, you are at their mercy, cause they know how bad you want to trade.
  • Been there too, I felt and know the product was not what I was told it was, but after travelling all that way I bought it anyway. Wished I had not as the better one was a lot closer only a week later.
  • No, it is not outrageous. But, it does depend on how much time and patience you have vs. finding what you want.

I traveled over 300 miles to buy a coach from a private party in December during a snow storm. I sold my Mustang convertible to a guy who flew in, bought it, and drove it home that evening, about 250 miles away. It just depends on your commitment.
